Introducing My Next Story, and Pay-What-You-Want

COMING SOON! Enemy of Existence

A new world. A reluctant band of colonists. A violent secret.

They came to find refuge from the war that destroyed their home. But instead they found an enemy more savage and relentless than any they had faced before.

With no link to the world they left behind, one man must fight a losing battle for humanity's existence, and it will change everything he knows.

My latest story, Enemy of Existence, will be available this summer in the forthcoming anthology Coming Around Again, from the Central Arkansas Fiction Writer's Group. Check out casfwg.com for more information on release dates, and other included titles.

In other news, I've added a new element to the site: a Pay-What-You-Want button for all the downloadable stories. Check out the FAQ for how it works.

Back in 2007, Radiohead were freshly liberated from their record contract, and decided to self-release their album In Rainbows via their website. The album was sold on a pay-what-you-want basis, and allowed users to download it for free if they wanted. Nine Inch Nails took a similar approach with their albums The Slip and Ghosts I-IV.

Both artists garnered critical praise for the move, which was seen as a much-needed break from record company dogma. The new sales model put artists directly in touch with fans, and allowed fans to give tacit feedback on the artist's work, showing or withholding their appreciation with their dollars.

I was inspired by this method. It might seem pointless, given that I've been posting my work for free until now, but I believe that readers (and music listeners) want to support the arts, and I think artists want a more direct dialogue with their fans. That's what this system is all about.

If you still want to read my stories for free, that's fine. Please do so with my blessing. But I would gladly accept any support you can offer, and I promise to reward that support with an ongoing commitment to providing the best, most entertaining stories I can create.

Let's see, what else is new...

Some time this spring, you can expect to see the stories from 3 Futures making their triumphant return. Now that the book is out of print, I'm going to do a fresh edit on all three, and try to find new homes for all of them. I'm definitely going to post Hidden Deeds here, so any new Jim Frankenstein fans can grab a copy. I'm planning to submit Upon The Summit of the City to a handful of publications, and hopefully it will find a home. I think it has a good shot. Walker, The Prophet might go in a drawer for a while if I can't find an anthology that wants it.

Aside from that, I'm tinkering with new short stories, and still making progress on the first Jim Frankenstein novel. As always, I'm swamped with freelance work, but this year I'm going to try to shift my focus entirely to fiction, so hopefully there won't be such long gaps between stories. I have a good feeling about 2016. I'm turning 33 in May, and statistically 33 is the happiest age in the average American male's life. So far, I'm right on track.

I'll try to keep you updated about the CASFWG anthology, and PLEASE pick up a copy once it's out. A lot of great authors will be appearing in it, it should be a good read.

That's all for now!
